OverPlate - #1

OverPlate®

OverPlate® is a lightweight, dry-fit UFH system designed for installation from above on suspended timber joists – ideal for first‑floor or retrofit scenarios where minimal disruption and zero floor build‑up are critical. The system uses reflective aluminium diffuser plates fixed directly across joists, allowing heat to be efficiently transferred upward through the subfloor and into the room.

Before installing OverPlate®, the joist void must be insulated, typically using mineral wool insulation or rigid board insulation supported by battens. This insulation must sit tightly against the underside of the aluminium plates to minimise downward heat loss and maximise thermal efficiency. Once installed, the plates form straight pipe channels for 16mm UFH pipework and generally cover around 80% of the heated floor area.

As a plated, suspended-floor UFH solution, OverPlate® provides a quicker thermal response than traditional screeded systems, with its reflective aluminium layer helping to push heat upward for consistent, efficient heat output. The system is tested in accordance with BS EN 1264‑2:2021.

Why Choose OverPlate®?

  • Designed for Joisted Floors: Ideal for suspended timber or battened floor structures, especially first‑floor applications.
  • High Heat Transfer Efficiency: Reflective aluminium plates maximise upward heat transfer through the subfloor.
  • Zero Impact on Floor Height: Installed within the existing floor void with no additional floor build‑up.
  • Quick Response Time: Lightweight aluminium plates help achieve faster warm‑up compared to screeded UFH systems.
  • Straightforward Installation: Plates fix directly to joists; suitable for straight pipe runs with predictable layout and performance.
  • Heat‑Pump Ready: Fully compatible with low‑temperature systems.

System Components & Build‑Up

  • Timber flooring (existing)
  • Aluminium diffuser plates (1000mm x 290mm x 0.5mm) – 0.39 m²
  • 16mm Ambiente UFH pipe laid into straight channels
  • Mineral wool or board insulation packed tightly beneath plates
  • Suspended timber floor joists

This layered arrangement ensures minimal downward heat loss and maximum thermal transfer into the occupied space above.

Thermal Performance

Tested in accordance with BS EN 1264‑2:2021, OverPlate® achieves up to 70 W/m² at 20°C room temperature with MWT 45°C and 0 tog covering. Performance will vary depending on covering type, pipe centres and building heat‑loss characteristics.

OverPlate® FAQs

Is OverPlate® suitable for retrofit installations?

Yes. OverPlate® is ideal for retrofit and first floor applications because it installs within the existing floor void and requires no floor build up, preserving room heights.

What insulation is required beneath the plates?

Can OverPlate® be used for curved pipe layouts?
