Underfloor Heating FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

Underfloor Heating FAQs

Underfloor heating (UFH) is gaining popularity for its ability to provide even, energy-efficient warmth to any space. However, it’s also a system that raises a lot of questions! If you’re considering underfloor heating for your home, you’re in the right place. In this article, we’ll address some of the most common questions about UFH and how Ambiente can provide the best underfloor heating solutions.

How does underfloor heating work?

Underfloor heating systems work by distributing heat evenly beneath your floor, warming the entire space from the ground up. There are two main types: electric underfloor heating, which uses electrical cables or mats, and water-based (hydronic) systems, which pump warm water through pipes.

Here at Ambiente, we specialise in water based underfloor heating systems, which are ideal for larger areas and more energy-efficient in the long run. These systems spread heat gently across the floor, eliminating cold spots and creating a cosy environment. They are particularly effective in homes with good insulation, ensuring that heat is retained and energy costs are kept low.

How much underfloor heating pipe do I need per m²?

The amount of underfloor heating pipe required depends on several factors, including the size of the room, insulation levels, and the type of UFH system being installed. Generally, a well-insulated room might need around 120 metres of pipe per 18 square metres, but it’s important to note that this is normally confirmed in the UFH cad designs.

This is where Ambiente comes in, our team offers expert calculations tailored to your specific home, ensuring the right amount of pipe is used to deliver optimal performance. For more information on pipe lengths and placement, read our Wet Underfloor Heating Design Guide.

Should you turn underfloor heating off at night?

Unlike traditional radiators that can be turned off and on quickly, UFH systems have a slower heat-up time due to their lower operating temperatures and large surface area. For this reason, it’s often more energy-efficient to leave your system on at a lower temperature, rather than turning it off completely.

With LunaTouch® WiFi Ambiente’s smart thermostat, you can easily set your UFH to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night without wasting energy, saving on your heating bills.

Can I have underfloor heating with boiler and radiators?

Absolutely! Underfloor heating can work alongside your existing boiler and radiators. You can choose to install UFH in certain rooms (like bathrooms or kitchens) while keeping radiators elsewhere.

Ambiente’s UFH systems are fully compatible with traditional heating methods, and with zoning controls, you can decide which areas of your home are heated by UFH and which use radiators, giving you complete flexibility and control.

Can underfloor heating pipes freeze?

While it’s rare for UFH pipes to freeze, it can happen during extremely cold weather before the system is turned on. However, water-based UFH systems, like those from Ambiente, are designed to avoid such issues. By designing controls with frost protection feature which keeps the house from going below 12 degrees c.

Do I need to dig up my floor to install UFH?

The thought of tearing up your floor can be a big concern for homeowners considering underfloor heating. Fortunately, the answer is: not always! While traditional UFH systems might require some disruption, there we specialise in low profile underfloor heating options that minimise the need for major construction.

Ambiente’s low-profile UFH systems are designed for easy retro-fitting, meaning they can be installed over existing floors, making it possible to enjoy the benefits of UFH without needing to dig up your home. This makes installation easier, faster, and less disruptive than you might expect.

Does underfloor heating work with heat pumps and solar panels?

Yes, underfloor heating is an ideal partner for renewable energy systems like heat pumps and solar panels. Because UFH operates at lower temperatures than radiators, it pairs perfectly with heat pumps, which also provide warmth at lower temperatures. Similarly, if you’re using solar panels, UFH can help maximise the efficiency of the energy generated.

At Ambiente, we’re dedicated to sustainable heating solutions, and our UFH systems are fully compatible with heat pumps and solar energy, helping you reduce both your carbon footprint and energy bills.

Why should I opt for a professionally designed UFH system instead of installing a DIY kit?

While there are plenty of DIY UFH kits on the market, they often come with risks. DIY kits may seem like a cost-effective solution, but they can lead to uneven heating, energy inefficiency, or even system failures. Mistakes during installation can also result in costly repairs down the line.

Opting for a professionally designed system from Ambiente ensures that your UFH is installed correctly and efficiently. Our team assesses your home’s specific needs, designing a system that will perform optimally, saving you time, stress, and money in the long run.
