Heat Pumps & Underfloor Heating
What is a Heat Pump?
Heat pumps move thermal energy from one environment to another, and in either direction to heat or cool a room. This allows the heat pump to effectively bring thermal energy into an occupied space, or to take it out for ventilation purposes. Heat pumps have been utilised in the UK for many years and are a tried and tested type of high efficiency, low cost heating.
ASHP (Air Source Heat Pump)
The ASHP absorbs air from the outside into a fluid called a refrigerant. As the refrigerant circulates inside the heat pump it is compressed, which increases the temperature. The heat pump turns the refrigerant into a gas, compresses it and then condenses back into a liquid again which generates heat energy. This then provides heating and hot water to your home.
Radiators vs Underfloor Heating
With underfloor heating, you can achieve higher efficiencies because of the low temperature required from the heat pump. Radiators either need to be correctly sized or replaced with bigger ones to cater for a lower flow temperature, or the heat pump needs to produce higher temperatures to emit sufficient heat from a smaller surface area.
Heat Pump Design
The result of good heat pump design is an efficient heat pump system that is capable of covering all of a property’s heat demand, regardless of outside temperature. A correctly sized heat pump will be capable of working at or near its capacity the majority of the time, and should not be working too hard. Heat pumps will last longer if there is less strain on the system. Correct design is also a key component of validating manufacturer warranties. If the system is not designed correctly the heat pump won’t reach its desired efficiency and bills will be higher. A specialist supplier like us can design correctly with this in mind.
